Supporting  Single Moms, Young Adults, Children, Seniors, Veterans, and Persons with Disabilities in Underserved Areas of Texas

WREM Literacy Group, Inc.

Looking into the eyes of the single mother, her children, the veteran, young adults aging out of foster care, and others living in poverty, you will see the deep Faith that change is going to come. You will feel their silent cry for HELP! Recognition of their hurt ensuing from the turmoil of living life and enduing the challenges of these tough economic times is not difficult and is a motivator to  effect positive change for them.  Through the bringing of the Your Discovery Place (YDP), WREM Literacy Group, Inc. has waged war on poverty, providing a means for the family to become self-sufficient, and alleviating dependence on social programs. Here individuals will be taught how to FISH. Our program was born out of the vision to move our clients from dependence on social programs to the role of a taxpayer, earning a sustainable income, and eventually homeowner.

The Your Discovery Place is a 13,000 sq. ft. state –of-the-art learning and technology center located in Cedar Hill, TX. The program will be piloted at 1156 South Joe Wilson Road, which spreads 2.5 acres that will be used to house and train. The 1156 South Joe Wilson property is the location for the pilot of the YDP.  It is currently under renovation and will be modified to accommodate the vision of the YDP. The center will focus on education, housing, and workforce development.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten

that we belong to each other.

                                                                      --Mother Teresa

The concept of the facility encompasses the entire family in the training process. While the parent is being developed for the workforce, under-school-aged children will attend as well. Children from the ages of 3 and 5 will enter pre-school to prep for kindergarten. They will be taught to read and appropriate classroom behavior. Children attending public school will participate in the after-school program.

The Your Discovery Place also provides for housing while the family participates in the transformation toward self-sufficiency. The Your Discovery Place will house up to 10 families at a time, while involve in the training process.  Housing participation is voluntary.  The participant does not have to live on-site to use the services of the YDP. Additionally, research will be conducted on the efficacy of teaching children to read at age 3 and monitoring their progress through age 5. Children will be taught according to the STOPLIGHT PHONICS in ACTION EARLY LEARNING Curriculum. Adult participants will offer training in several areas: cosmetology, barbering, construction technology, computer literacy classes, CDL, and other job related skills training. A resource center and adult literacy training laboratory is a major aspect of the program. To boost their success at independent living, participants must complete Financial Literacy and Housing Counseling training.

The Your Discovery Place is an audacious goal, but nevertheless feasible, as a facility of its kind is needed as a model for combating the massive poverty that exists in Texas --- poverty that stems from poor literacy and the inappropriate availability of job related training. The Your Discovery Place will be the home of the WREM SPIL and YouthBuild Projects as well. WREM SPIL works with single mothers and young adults that age out of foster care to prepare them for earning a sustainable income, while nurturing them in the preparation for self-sufficient and independent living. YouthBuild trains young men in the art of vertical and horizontal construction. Under YouthBuild, students learn the process of residential construction from design to completion of the construction.

The need for a Your Discovery Place and its services of specialized training in low-income areas far exceeds the dollars available for assistance. Therefore, donors’ dollars are essential for the success of this mission. Their contributions open the door for them to become participants in the solution when they bring much needed donations. Without donor participation, the vision of the Your Discovery Place will materialize slowly. As such, our reach into the community would be slighted, and many more people would fall prey to the bondage of poverty for lack of service.  A capital campaign is under consideration to raise funds in addition to grant funding.

We are humbly asking for your partnership. Your support is crucial to the success of this campaign to decimate intergenerational poverty. Please help us break every chain that poverty imposes for our participants. Support us in our endeavor to offer the single mother and others the Choice to take a Chance on Change that will bring positive improvements. As a volunteer or donor, however you wish, a difference will be made. Whatever the means, we are grateful! Thank you so very much for your support and partnership as we confront poverty and block it from robbing the Child of an enlightened future! The concept of the facility encompasses the entire family in the training process.
